Ok, I ll admit I was a tad sceptical of Chris Colfer s Land of Stories series as I am with any celebrity writer and whilst I m not enamoured with his style, I can completely get and see why he has so many devoted fans, and I suspect my daughter is going to become one as she has sat and pored over the characters for HOURS and made her dad read her the bonus chapters. The first half of the book is devoted to the fans both old and new of TLOS, with character guides, politics and geography of this fictional world which is a great thing to help readers orientate themselves or remind themselves of characters as they rediscover someone make predictions of what to expect. The second half of the book is a treasure trove for future storytellers, teachers and home educators as Colfer basically lays it all out how the stories came to be from planning, drafting, character visualising, creating maps to help frame the action which is such a useful resource for young people who want to be authors but may feel disheartened that a publication worthy novel doesn t just plop out of the head fully formed and edited between tea time and bed one evening. There s great ideas and resources to use to explore the writing and encourage creative writing activities throughout and for that it s a 5 star hands down even if you don t read the books quelle horreur but if you do choose to the read the books there s a wealth of added value here.I would recommend this to fans of the series but also to young future authors, KS2 3 teachers of English, home Educators

I must admit and it is my own fault, I did not really read the description for this book and just saw the title Land of stories and that it was a children s book, so I ordered it for the children It is only after the fact that I realized it is actually only a guide book for The Land of Stories books It goes into depth about the characters and settings of the stories It has served to peak my interest in the books for my children and maybe I will buy the whole set, as it is currently available on as a complete set If you haven t read the books, then this is a good insight into them and a nice way to see if you might enjoy them before wasting your money I d buy the kindle version though if that is the case The hardcover version is lovely though, with nice illustrations, but it is a bit in cost.

Chris Colfer is someone I already know having watched a season of Glee As well as acting he s also a very popular author of a children s fantasy story series.Even though I haven t read any of the books, many, if not most, of the characters and creatures are well established mythological and fairy tale beasts. This is a beautifully put together small book slightly smaller than typical paperback format , with many wonderful illustrations throughout The text is informative for what it is, obviously I wouldn t go quoting any of this in your Biology, History or Geography exams , witty and sometimes outright funny.I d say this is a no brainer if you re a fan of the series, but worth looking at if you just enjoy fairy tales and creatures of make believe in general.
