The Story Of The Jews: Finding the Words (1000 BCE – 1492) Simon Schama is at his best when he s giving detailed descriptions that build up a picture of life in a particular time The detail could become overwhelming, but rarely does Mr Schama uses personal correspondence and public artifacts to build up a picture of Jewish communities in particular times and places in the period covered His description from the geniza finds in Egypt of a family sniping at each other in letters springs most readily to mind I didn t give five stars because the odd time I had to skim read sections that did overwhelm with detail, for me it was a section about poetry Skimming a section didn t detract from the overall story though, and again I became hooked into the story of another community.Less pleasantly, but equally importantly, Mr Schama details the origins of the blood libel that dogged the Jewish community of Western Europe and the gradual build up of persecution during the Middle Ages Somehow, it makes later events seem tragically inevitable.I m looking forward to reading Mr Schama s follow up work. The standard narrative, known throughout the Western World at least, is based on the New Testament Schama tells of an energetic Diaspora, from North Africa to Baghdad, with flourishing communities, whose cultures contribute much to the modern Jews, than the Temple practice of the Jews known to the Romans.Quite different to the current received wisdom and essential for understanding Jews and Judaism today. Simon Schama at his best, brilliantly written, he engages the reader from the first page A real tour de force. The book uses some interesting examples to illustrate the history of the Jews Many of the examples I did not know In some cases I found this this both interesting and informative in others I am afraid I did not. This book is well written. The extent of the Jewish Faith not only to survive but also to benefit mankind is a wonder in itself.I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain some insight into the suffering of a religion a the admirable determination of people to defy the acceptance of the easy option. So disappointing Expected it to be an organised book on the history of the Jewish people and instead it was just rabble. This is a fascinating and well written book Not many history books are page turners but this one is. Excellent A super read by a trusted author A history of the jews from moses to the present day by one of the world s finest historians, shot through with his own sense of what it means to have a jewish history brilliant
