First off if you look at this book as a collection of images of the paper cuttings that Andersen created it works well as a picture book or coffee table book However if you are looking for in depth additional information you have the wrong book All in all I was looking for an introduction into the life of Hans Christian Andersen with some biographical information with pictures of his artwork, this book achieved that However I think even for a children s book I would have liked details, at least than 80 pages worth some of those taken up by full page photographs. The book is written like a fairy tale than a non fiction factual book which makes it a very easy read and I m sure would make it great to read to a child. There are good quotes in the book for example on the subject of Hans Christina Andersen s thoughts on great men He believed he understood how to become one First you go through a terribly hard time, and then you become famous. As this was a children s non fiction title I was not expecting a comprehensive biography of Hans Christian Anderson and his artwork but I was expecting .

I love this book The cuttings have a crude charm that most of the popular current pieces don t The text is as interesting as the many cuttings pictured are, which surprised me I can only imagine the wonder described at sitting in a circle around Mr Anderson as he told a wonderful story, snipping paper as he spoke Only to unfold a magical cutting filled with characters in the story, just as he finished the telling Eyes must have grown wide with delight. The design of the book is very appealing It feels like a precious work of art in it s own right.

I am so glad I found this book It is a well researched artifact, and the photographs of HCA s paper cuttings are masterful I m surprised that it s marketed as a children s book, when I am unaware of any general audience books on the matter The writing is certainly understandable for a young person, but the complexity of the cuttings and the dimension of HCA s life are challenging and exciting for an adult to think on, too Glad I bought this and read it before arriving at HCA s house and museum in Odense It really added to my experience.

I m a paper artist who also happens to be a Hans Christian Andersen fan I bought the book for myself, although it would be a terrific selection for a child who likes to use scissors and glue or who might be interested in the person behind some of their favorite fairy tales It s hard to find many printed examples outside of Denmark of Hans Christian Andersen s cut paper work Beth Wagner Brust is a paper cutter herself and brings this enthusiasm to her book She has performed a great service for Andersen fans and paper cutters of all ages.
