Great pacing, straightforward, good prose style, and detailed enough to be satisfying. This is mostly a classic detective story, uncovering clues and knitting a big picture of a crime in linear fashion The characters and police behaviour are quite believable, and the cop is heroic and is on a mission to solve the puzzle, and to save himself from his earlier mistakes. The bonus here is the warm and wonderful bonding between the cop and his K 9 partner.I will be reading of Robert Crais work.

This is a stand alone novel by Mr Crais outside of the deservedly popular Elvis Cole Joe Pike detective series Having a damaged hero with a troubled past is pretty much cliche number one these days but Mr Crais manages to take it to another level by adding a non human damaged hero to the mix in this case an ex Army bomb sniffing dog now recruited into the L.A police force The dog has trauma after his previous handler was blown up and the human hero Scott James has trauma after seeing his former police partner shot dead They re put together on the police dog team and Mr Crais writes the novel with alternating perspectives between dog and handler as they track down who ambushed and killed Scott James partner It didn t quite work for me, certainly not to the same level as the Cole Pike series It looks like these characters feature in one of the upcoming Cole and Pike series so that should prove interesting.

I have read every Crais book He is one of the top thriller writers around even better than Lee Child His books are well written and plotted but this exceeds them. There is no Joe Pike or Elvis Cole but that is a good thing They were in need of a rest and he has proven that he is not a one trick pony. This is very well written and moves at a very quick pace So quick that I read this with a break while my Kindled recharged That s right, both my Kindles were on low battery when I started and died on me.This has action, suspense, drama and emotion You are likely to cry in places and I never do that Like all good thrillers you remain gripped page after page and you want to keep reading. He weaves the story together by telling parts from varying perspectives, even that of the dog, and it works very well.Buy it Read it Love it.

I m not sure what I expected when I started this book but it certainly wasn t what I got I found this novel the story of an injured officer and his equally injured K 9 dog looking for answers to his shooting extremely heartwarming and uplifting The plot is relatively straightforward and there is none of the dark humour I associate with Mr Crais, if anything Scott James is rather naive but Mr Crais trademark theme of loyalty is there between man and dog this time I enjoyed this book it kept me reading through various twists and turns and the growing bond between Maggie and Scott Good stuff.

A standalone story this is one of the best by this author A military attack dog is handed over to the LA police for use in crime detection The dog is assigned to a police officer for training The pair are involved in the solution of an old case in which the officer had survived wounding by criminals who killed his partner How they resolve it makes a fascinating tale This book should not be missed.

I have been reading Robert Crais since he first appeared and his stories and characters have never failed to impress me This time, for me, he has excelled himself. The book only came out in kindle today and I ve already finished it Much of the time I had tears in my eyes but could not stop reading as this time his story really hit a nerve.I won t spoil it but if you have ever had the honour of sharing your life or possibly your work with man s best friend, read this and be prepared to re live some of those amazing moments. Thanks for getting it so very right.

The author used a great way to introduce us to the absolutely amazing work army and police dogs do, and I thought that it was sensitive and heart wrenching in the way he dealt with human and animal emotions, but still maintaining the thrill element of his writing that he is known for As a dog lover myself I could relate to the bond formed and there is great scope to develop that bond and the characters moving forward I thoroughly enjoyed it.

While this is a departure from the tried and tested formula of Cole and Pike novels it maintains the same high standard of writing that has made Robert Crais one of the most popular modern novelists. The engaging storyline centres around the developing relationship between Maggie, a German shepherd, and her new handler both of whom are recovering from gunshot wounds All the characters are likeable and the plot, though perhaps not as edgy as some of the Cole novels, develops fairly swiftlyrecommended.

  10. says:

Enjoyable read The story rumbles along nicely, a few bits slightly implausible, perhaps, but hey that s fiction Slight implausibility isn t a problem Interesting characters and back story, nice dog a bonus Yep if you like his other stuff, you ll like this Much, much better writer than David Baldacci.

Really enjoyed this book Maggie was portrayed brilliantly but I suspect the initial meet would have happened slightly differently Good story. One issue I have though, this author s books are priced at 4.99 on but on Ibooks they are half that price Come on get competitive here Otherwise it will be a while before I buy another sadly.

A good read but a bit of a change from the usual Robert Crais type story It s about a police dog and a cop, both of whom are struggling to recover from past traumas in service There s lots of action and some great detail about how police dogs are trained I didn t expect the sections from the direct point of view of the dog but they worked.

  14. says:

No Elvis Cole, no Joe Pikeno problem This is another very good book from Mr Crais and draws you in from page one I finished it in a couple of days sitting in the sun by the pool yes it is a another pacy tale, well written and simply told. The story line and the relationship between Scot and Maggie have movie written all over them and I can t wait to see it.

  15. says:

Not about Cole and Pike Just a fantastic tale written with brilliant wit and dark humour Deep and emotional with a superb gut wrenching story line One of the best books I ve ever read.Robert Crais is one of my favourite authors and he sits comfortably on the same bookshelf as Jack Higgins, Lee Child, Wilbur Smith and Tom Wood.An easy five stars.
