Amazingly detailed, yet easily read The photographs alone would make this volume a worthwhile purchase, but the text makes this a must read overview of the subject.

There are very few books available that will give someone with casual interest in Palaeolithic art a strong foundation on the subject Anyone interested in formal study of the subject should read this book too Whilst it is a little dated now, it is still a valuable book to read to understand the history of Palaeolithic art, the problems with interpretation, dating, recording and classifying the nature of Ice Age art Both static and portable art is discussed in equal measure, and it is good to see that the portable art is given the same space as cave art which dominates publications of this era Ideally it needs to be brought up to date with some of the recent discoveries, but if you see this book in a used book store then take it home.

Worth to get I like the tweaks in formatting and the smaller size works better The new information and pictures are well thought out I m really happy with this book and I think everyone who loves Palaeolithic art should get it, even if you have the older edition.

Outstanding book with the latest discoveries in ice age art, theories, and analysis Beautiful photos of the art, along with interesting discussions of the oldest art in the world, dating methods, the art itself, and reading the messages.

It s been a while since I ve read the text of this book, or looked at any of the pictures, so what I ll do is describe what lingers after so many months To wit there s something special about being a human being, that you and I share with people whose lifeways were pretty much unimaginably different from ours The people who made the art shown here did not know from dentists and pencils or milk jugs I doubt if they had a concept for o clock No metal, no wheels or pulleys, no insecticide They lived twenty years, or forty max This was art made tens and tens of thousands of years ago, by people so different from me, and yet I experience the beauty in them still I find that thrilling.

Images of the Ice Age Images of the Ice Age, here in its third edition, is the most complete study available of the world s earliest imagery, presenting a fascinating and up to date account of the art of our Ice Age ancestors Authoritative and wide ranging, it covers not only the magnificent cave art of famous sites such as Lascaux, Altamira, and Chauvet, but also other less well known sites around the world, art discovered in the open air, and the thousands of incredible pieces of portable art in bone, antler, ivory, and stone produced in the same period In doing so, the book summarizes all the major worldwide research into Ice Age art both past and present, exploring the controversial history of the art s discovery and acceptance, including the methods used for recording and dating, the faking of decorated objects and caves, and the wide range of theories that have been applied to this artistic corpus Lavishly illustrated and highly accessible, Images of the Ice Age provides a visual feast and an absorbing synthesis of this crucial aspect of human history, offering a unique opportunity to appreciate universally important works of art, many of which can never be accessible to the public, and which represent the very earliest evidence of artistic expression
