The emperor has no clothes here.while some of the chapters are truly myths, most defy description was Bing Crosby really rich Is that a real myth Is getting an Oscar a big deal Is that a scandal, a secret, or a myth And the segments he does put in here that could arguably qualify for the title he s chosen for his book e.g., Marilyn Monroe and Sal Mineo s deaths aren t solved, just superficially discussed It s worse than reading headlines in the checkout line You get from a Wikipedia page Very disappointing.

An interesting book for quick bed time read Most of the sensational stories are treated in a reasonable and probably factual manner and there are a few new facts brought to light My complaint is that fully 1 3 of the book is index, etc When I reached the seventy percent point in this book, it was over The chapters on the mechanics of Hollywood were the most informative especially the parts about how theaters make almost no money from the films they show

This is an interesting visit to Hollywood complete with some really old stories that are the stuff of urban Hollyweird legend It is well written and manages to breathe some life into this collection of oddities that are still floating around. In attempt to create order from chaos, the author tries to stick to the facts while letting his readers draw their own conclusions While the tales and facts surrounding them at times deviate a bit from what I remember, this can be fun as it puts everything in a new light Who can resist stuff like what really happened to the ice cream blonde who was last seen alive cavorting in Hollywood It just gets better as we walk down cowlick haired and off key Carl Alfalfa Switzer road to oblivion as he supplemented his sporadic film income with hunting excursions as a tour guide Was Alfalfa s godfather really King of the Cowboys Roy Rogers Who knows.A fun and only moderately campy book, this is perfect for the Hollywood fan.
