Although the book hasn t been revised or updated in the past 15 years, it continues to provide a sound and valued overview of the low budget independent film sales and distribution process However, readers should be aware that, despite its title, the book is focused primarily on marketing and promoting independent films to sales agents and distributors not to audience members Perhaps as a result, the book offers little in the way of step by step instructions on how to develop a marketing and promotional campaign or supporting materials collateral key art, posters, teasers and trailers, websites, IMDb listings, electronic press kits, public releases, etc For a book with far greater detail on marketing and promotion as well as the current state of distribution , I strongly recommend reading and studying BTW I also recommend reading and studyingGuerrilla Film Marketing The Ultimate Guide to the Branding, Marketing and Promotion of Independent Films Filmmakers another very helpful resource with dozens of helpful step by step instructions on how to create marketing and promotional campaigns and highly effective posters, key art, teaser and trailers, IMDb listings, electronic press kits EPKs and many other marketing and promotional materials Otherwise, Bosko s book remains a valuable read Overall grade B

As an independent film maker, I have read through dozens of books pertaining to film marketing distribution, and this one ranks in the top 3 This book REALISTICALLY guides you through the endeavors of marketing while in the world of independent films Through the book it teaches you how to find a distributor and the best ways to pitch your film to them and it also shows you how to distribute the film yourself What I like most that in the back of the book it features a list of INDEPENDENT FILM FRIENDLY distribution companies that you can contact after reading the book.ONLY DOWNSIDE OF THE BOOK, its about 10 years old and still mentions VHS and mentions the internet as a NEW MEDIA don t let that discourage you from getting it, it will still give you a wealth of information.

Some things are outdated but it s aware of that, constantly telling you that times always change so taking the basis of what the book gives is what is important Great for people who really want to understand marketing standpoints Especially for independent filmmakers who think luck has a lot to do with a film s success it s a great eye opener.
